Reducing environmental impact of development, production and logistics to zero

AISIN Group is working to reduce its environmental impact to zero, chiefly through the Environmental Conservation Study Group. This includes developing products that make effective use of resources and can be recycled; stepping up resource recycling at the production and logistics stages; and making effective use of water resources.

Measures against plastic in the oceans[AISIN Group]

AISIN Group is working to solve the global issue of plastic in the oceans by actively using eco bags and reducing disposal bags at registers.
1.15 million register bags were used by Aisin Seiki and Aisin AW in FY2019.
To reduce register bag usage to zero by FY2021, AISIN Group launched four initiatives in FY2020: no longer actively distributing plastic register bags, putting up posters in our stores to raise awareness, selling eco bags and sharing eco bags.

Recycling of all wastewater from plant processes[Aisin Sin’ei]

Aisin Sin’ei’s Kouta Plant has implemented initiatives to reduce water usage. Water-saving valves have been installed in the basins in the plant and a laser separation system that uses no water has been introduced to remove electrodeposition tools. An RO membrane was also added to the system for treating wastewater from the electrodeposition line, enabling ions to be removed too. All wastewater has been recycled since October 2018, with none disposed of.

Reducing waste casting sand through recycling [Aisin Takaoka]

Since fiscal 2014, Aisin Takaoka’s Kira Plant is achieving major reductions in casting sand waste, a form of industrial waste, by recycling it as core sand for internally manufactured casting cores. As of fiscal 2018, the company has sought to create a setup for supplying recycled sand to a casting core manufacturer on its premises and expand recycling of casting sand further and has contributed to reducing industrial waste output by 4,200 tons per year.

Prevention of pollution

The AISIN consolidated environmental policy extends beyond compliance with international standards and the laws, regulations and conventions of each country we are involved with - we have also pledged to establish our own standards and endeavor to prevent pollution. Based on this policy, the AISIN Group has set more stringent anti-pollution standards than those stipulated by relevant laws, regulations and ordinances. Measurements are taken regularly and trends are monitored as a proactive measure against pollution.

Soil and groundwater are monitored particularly closely, with a well installed on the border of each company or factory's site and regular measurements carried out. If pollution is discovered, groundwater or gases are suctioned from the soil and purified.

We also carry out training to prevent effluent from entering waterways such as rivers and seas.

Initiatives to reduce water use

The AISIN Group has created water shortage risk standards and used them to identify high-risk sites.

Four targets have been set to promote effective water use at our 11 sites with a particularly high risk: (1) reduction of water intake, (2) appropriate use of groundwater, (3) appropriate use of industrial water and (4) the installation of emergency water tanks.

Various initiatives are taking place based on these targets. ADVICS Yunfu Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. in China and the Kota Plant of Aisin Sin'ei Co., Ltd. are recycling water, while Aisin Seiki's Kariya site makes use of rainwater.

Selecting business locations at high risk of drought

Using the water-related risk assessment tool Aqueduct, and by formulating our own original assessment standard reflecting the results of interviews with personnel to determine the actual situation at the various Group companies, we selected 13 high-risk locations from among a total of 158 locations both in Japan and overseas.

To set targets that match actual conditions at high-risk locations, in fiscal 2019 we will conduct on-site checks at the 13 selected locations, and set targets and promote activities to match the situation at those sites.

Actions Toward achieving appropriate disposal of high-concentration PCB devices by the prescribed deadline

To ensure the disposal of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) by the deadline stipulated by law (the end of March 2027), AISIN Group in Japan has formulated a Group Integrated Disposal Plan*, which sets earlier arbitrary deadlines ahead of the date stipulated by law.

After ascertaining the number of devices with high concentrations of PCBs stored and/or currently in use by the Group, as of June 2018, we have now disposed of 70% of high-concentration PCB devices. This was achieved through initiatives such as negotiating to obtain joint disposal allotments and outsourcing consolidated transportation of PCB devices across the Group.

Moving forward, we will continue to drive disposal activities as a united Group, with a view to the total eradication of all PCBs.

* Disposal of high-concentration PCBs is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2021 and low-concentrations PCBs by the end of fiscal 2025.
